Center for Discovery Palm Beach outpatient is a treatment facility in Florida that treats male and female clients of all ages who are struggling with an eating disorder with or without a mental health disorder. This dual-diagnosis facility has Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) trained therapists onsite and offers trauma-informed yoga as ways to treat clients who have a history of trauma. This facility opened in December 2016 and is close to interstate 95 in beautiful Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, with close proximity to Ft. Lauderdale airport.

Discovery’s specialized Binge Eating Disorder (BED) program, Path to Peace, is also offered at this location.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Scarlett Black Psy.D., LPC, RPT, joined Center for Discovery in early 2018. Dr. Black earned her Doctorate Degree in Clinical Psychology at Forest Institute of Professional Psychology with a specialization in Child and Pain Management. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Registered Play Therapist. She has also completed her training in EMDR and is working towards certification.

Dr. Black completed her clinical internship in New York at Sagamore Children’s Psychiatric and has extensive experience working in the field of Psychology with diverse populations in residential, inpatient and outpatient facilities across the United States. She oversaw several schools in the Houston’s South Region (HISD) providing crisis intervention and counseling services to at-risk youth and their families. Dr. Black has since relocated to Florida where she has worked with treatment centers providing evidence-based practices addressing substance abuse disorders, complex trauma, grief and loss, mood disorders, and anger management for both adolescents and adult clients.

Dr. Black is continually pursuing growth and strongly believes that whatever the mind can perceive you can achieve. She is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Association of Play Therapy. She strives to create a safe and supportive atmosphere for all clients to foster insight and create lasting change.

Stephanie Klein, RD, LDN, RYT

REGISTERED DIETITIAN

Stephanie is a Registered, Licensed Dietitian and Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT). She received her Bachelors of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics from West Chester University of Pennsylvania and completed her dietetic internship with Sodexo Mid-Atlantic at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. After working as a Clinical Dietitian for close to 5 years she decided to transition to private practice in 2017.

Stephanie works with clients to help improve their relationship with food and their bodies, so they can thrive and focus on living their best life. She has a passion for intuitive eating and mindful movement. Her professional goals include, obtaining her intuitive eating certification within the next year. Stephanie has attended the Body Image Workshop: Training for Clinicians in 2018. Stephanie is actively working towards earning her Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian (CEDRD) through IAEDP.

Stephanie’s passion for intuitive eating began during her college years when she noticed many friends and family members falling into diet culture and struggling with body image. This sparked her to do some soul searching and she began delving including books like, Intuitive eating, Health at Every Size, and Body Kindness, to name a few. She developed a strong passion for disordered eating and body kindness which is when she began searching for career opportunities at eating disorder facilities. She found Center for Discovery and after discovering their philosophies aligned, knew that this was the home for the next chapter of her career.

Amanda “Mandy” Pelletier, RDN

Amanda “Mandy” Pelletier, RDN

DIETITIAN

Mandy is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist. She received her Bachelors of Dietetics from Florida State University and completed her dietetic internship with Wellness Workdays in Boston, Massachusetts. Mandy has worked as a Diet Tech and Registered Dietitian in the field of eating disorders at the residential and outpatient levels of care.

Mandy works with clients to make peace with food and rediscover intuitive eating. She believes in getting back to your roots, trusting your body and it signals. Mandy’s food philosophy includes Intuitive Eating, Health At Every Size and All Foods Fit. Her professional goals are to obtain her Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian (CEDRD) certification through IAEDP and become a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. Mandy has also begun training to bridge the gap between eating disorders and gastrointestinal issues.

Mandy’s passion for eating disorders began in college when she watched her best friend struggle and then recover from an eating disorder. Mandy then began working as a diet tech at a residential facility to merge her passion for dietetics and mental health advocacy. Since Mandy has dedicated her dietetic career to help others obtain a healthy relationship with food and their bodies.

PSYCHIATRIST

Dr. Tasmina Sheikh is the psychiatrist at Center for Discovery in North Palm Beach treating both adolescents and adults, as well as their families, impacted by mental health, eating disorders, and substance abuse issues. Dr. Sheikh is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She completed her residency in General Psychiatry at the University of Buffalo School of Medicine and a fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at the Jackson Memorial Hospital in the University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Sheikh brings 20 years of experience in psychiatric medicine through various distinguished institutions in both public and private clinical settings. She opened her private solo practice in 2003 and continues to proudly practice psychiatric medicine in Jupiter, Florida.

Elisa Mott Jones, Ed.S, NCC, E-RYT 500, RMHCI, discovered her passion for the art of teaching and pedagogy as a dance minor at Appalachian State University in North Carolina. She stays true to her original yoga training roots and fully embodies the Kripalu motto of “meditation in motion” in each of her groups and sessions with clients. Elisa has Masters and Specialist degrees in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Florida as well as Certificates in Arts in Medicine and Spirituality and Health. She is a Health At Every Size (HAES) Advocate, published author and national speaker on yoga, eating disorders and body image.She integrates the healing modalities of yoga, reiki, mindfulness and expressive movement to support her clients in achieving balance, wholeness and satisfaction with their bodies, lives and food.

PRIMARY THERAPIST

Melanie Milano, MA, RMHCI Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern, is the Program Therapist at Center for Discovery Palm Beach Gardens. Melanie earned a dual bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Early Childhood Development from the University at Buffalo. She began volunteering with preschool age children with developmental disabilities as well as assisting in conducting research on interpersonal relationships. Melanie went on to pursue her Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Hunter College where she spent her internships working with mentally ill young adults in the college setting. She successfully developed and implemented programs meant to target at risk college students. Upon graduation, Melanie became a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern in the state of Florida. Ms. Milano joined the Discovery team in 2018 where she is currently working towards licensure. Melanie uses clinically effective evidence-based approaches to therapy such as, DBT, CBT and Psychotherapy. Melanie plans to pursue certification in EMDR over the next year. She believes each client should be met where they are at and have an individualized treatment plan tailored to that client’s specific needs.

Anna Schad joined Center for Discovery in early 2019. She is a Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with 8 years of counseling experience and has been running her private practice in Palm Beach Gardens for the past 5 years. Throughout her life, Anna has been passionate about helping others and feels fortunate enough to have made a career out of it.

Anna received a Bachelors Degree from the University of Florida and graduated from Palm Beach Atlantic University with a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology. She completed her pre-graduate internship at the counseling center at Christ Fellowship where she worked with women who were struggling with anxiety, eating disorders, depression, addictions, brain trauma, OCD, motherhood, family relationships, marriage, pre-marriage, trauma, and infidelity, among others. Since 2013, Anna has run a private practice where she works with male and female adults and adolescents, couples, and families who are struggling with anxiety disorders, depression, co-dependency, addictions, eating disorders, relationship issues, motherhood, post-partum depression, etc. Utilizing a variety of treatments including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy, and DBT/Mindfulness, she comes alongside her clients to help them work through thoughts, behaviors, relationships, and past events that are preventing them from achieving their goals and leading rich rewarding lives.

Anna strives to create a comfortable, safe, judgment-free zone…a place where clients can share, gain a new understanding of themselves, and find the balance that is missing in their lives. She encourages her clients to plant themselves where they will bloom.

Mrs. Jessie Huebner, LMHC, CEDS, CAP, ICADC, joined Center for Discovery in 2016 as part of the Palm Beach Gardens outpatient team.  Mrs. Huebner received her master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia and is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with the state of Florida.  She is an active member of the International Association for Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP) and is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS).  She is a Certified Addictions Professional (CAP) and has extensive experience in the treatment of eating disorders and substance abuse, including completion of her formal master’s internship at a respected eating disorder treatment center at all levels of care.  Mrs. Huebner is EMDRIA approved EMDR therapist. She also believes in giving back to the community, and as such has been a committed member of the Alliance for Eating Disorders, formerly leading their free community support groups and currently serves on the board for IAEDP local chapter. Mrs. Huebner uses an evidence-based treatment approach, including CBT, ACT, DBT, strengths-based therapy, and motivational interviewing methods. She believes that all people are whole and treatment can help them reconnect with the missing parts of themselves, allowing a life of purpose and intentionality. When she is not working at Discovery, she is a busy professional in her private practice.

FACILITY COORDINATOR

Maliha Qazi Bsc., CPB, CPPM graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Texas at San Antonio and is credentialed in practice management and billing through the AAPC Board.

Maliha has worked in the healthcare administration field within various clinical settings over the last ten years. She is passionate about improving healthcare operations to provide the best outcomes for clients and advocating for ways clients may benefit from their time in treatment.

Maliha joined Center for Discovery at the Palm Beach Gardens location earlier this year and works with our ED and MH program clients by providing support in everyday treatment setting. As a coordinator, Maliha ensures the facility is maintained and adheres to all rules set by Joint Commission and her goal is to maintain a welcoming environment where clients can feel safe and empowered to begin steps towards their recovery. She is a strong believer that clients do well when their team delivers the best care possible and she strives to do her part by ensuring the Palm Beach Gardens Outpatient team have the resources which will allow them to provide exceptional clinical care. Maliha will continue to pursue her interest in therapy by earning a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

  • I was sent to [Center for Discovery], an all women's eating disorder treatment facility, and I was terrified to go. I was told I would be there for a month and would return home after that. I ended staying there for almost 3 months, and I can honestly say I am beyond thankful for my time there. I learned so much and they helped me find myself and get over my traumas and learn to cope with issues that I was having. All the staff was super helpful and had my best interest at heart. I may have not liked all of them, but I knew they wanted what was best for me. Even after my insurance run out, the therapist I was working with arranged for me to go to another center to continue my treatment because I was not ready to come home. I highly recommend getting help with Center for Discovery. They truly care!

  • I was at [Center for Discovery] for 6 weeks. I'm from Ohio and being so far away from home was hard. The staff made me feel super comfortable and cared for, making my stay much more manageable. The program was very individualized. They worked hard to make sure my specific needs were met and that my specific behaviors were addressed. This is a top notch facility with incredibly caring staff. Not only were the house staff wonderful, but everyone from admissions to the medical director worked hard to make sure I knew what was going on. This is a wonderful company who are true to what they say. They gave me my life back. I'm someone who has been in and out of treatment for my eating disorder and this program was by far the best. I feel so optimistic about my future. The progress I made there was life changing and I will be forever grateful. I recommend this program to anyone who is serious, willing, and ready to get better.

  • I was surprised by my parents with the option of going to get help for my eating disorder and overall unhealthy lifestyle. I so badly wanted to get help, but was too ashamed. After talking to my mom I agreed to at least talk to someone from Center for Discoveryabout what program I would be in and what it would be like. The gal was super helpful, kind, and did not make me feel like I was the only person who suffered from what I did. She was very patient with me and overall helped out our family with the process of insurance and costs and what not. As for the actual facility I stayed at, it was a great experience.

  • We had our son in an acute care hospital and the social worker recommended the Center for Discovery. Before our son was discharged, my wife and I met with the staff and toured the facility. We were impressed by the staff and how the program was structured. Our son was there 6 weeks. It was a game changer and now we feel our son left with a good base of skills that he has continued to use. We now feel our son can leave a normal type life and not have to worry that he may need to live in a group home setting as an adult. We can't say enough for the help and support we received from the entire staff at the Center for Discovery. When we were considering the facility we did some reviews on line. Some weren't overly positive, but most were and we feel that it was a very positive experience for our son and our family. Even our son now admits that he learned some great skills and that his time at Center for Discovery turned his life around.

  • I completely recommend this outpatient program for the treatment of eating disorders.  The program is tailored to each individual and my daughter was able to attend school while attending. The staff is caring, knowledgeable and fully committed to the treatment process for the patient and family.  My family now better understands eating disorders and we are able to support our daughter through her recovery.  5 stars all the way!!
