What is Exposure & Response Prevention?
Exposure & response prevention (ERP) therapy is an evidence-based treatment modality that has proven to be effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders. ERP therapy was designed to desensitize individuals to their fears and distresses. Because anxiety and eating disorders commonly co-occur, ERP has proven to be a useful tool in treating both together.
Exposure & Response Prevention for Eating Disorders
During ERP, eating disorder patients can practice exposing themselves to distressful events and experiences that have triggered eating disorder behaviors in the past, such as eating a fear food, attending a social event, dining out and more. The primary goal during exposure sessions is for the individual to remain connected with the trigger without using ritualistic behaviors.
Exposure & Response Prevention through Our Dietary Program
In the Center for Discovery dietary program, ERP is one of four key concepts used to help patients make peace with food. The ERP process, which can occur over the course of several sessions or during one session, begins by discussing the food, observing the food, handling the food through meal preparation and then consuming the food. This technique has a unique “hands-on,” real-life approach — from conceptualization and preparation to actual cooking, shopping and restaurant outings with the guidance of a registered dietitian.
