Center for Discovery Orlando outpatient is an eating disorder outpatient treatment center offering intensive outpatient therapy to female and male clients of all ages. This outpatient treatment center opened in August 2016 and prides itself on its wide range of therapeutic specialties, including Internal Family Systems, Psychodrama, Feminist approach, LGBTQIA+ informed care, HeartMath (biofeedback), and Reality based therapy. Discovery’s specialized Binge Eating Disorder (BED) program, Path to Peace, is also offered at this location.

Conveniently located in Maitland, just off Highways 414 and I-4, this facility is easily accessible to the Greater Orlando Area, beautiful Winter park, and Altamonte Springs.

Elizabeth Carges, PhD

Elizabeth Carges, PhD

CLINICAL ADVISOR

Elizabeth Carges, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist specializing in evidenced based treatments for the broad spectrum of eating disorders. She also possesses expertise in treating anxiety and trauma-based disorders.

Dr. Carges received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Rochester. She completed her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Florida. Her work has been published in multiple journals including The Journal of Men and Masculinity, Clinical Case Studies, and Cognitive Behavioral Practice. Subsequently, she completed her fellowship at the Orlando VA Medical Center where she acquired specialized training for the treatment of PTSD and other complex trauma.

In addition to her current role as Clinical Advisor for Center For Discovery’s Orlando Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs, Dr. Carges currently maintains a private practice in Maitland, FL.

Jennifer Hounshell, LMFT, QS

PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Jennifer graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. She is passionate about working with disordered eating as this population has previously been underserved. Prior to becoming Program Director Jennifer served as Primary Therapist for Center for Discovery. She has worked as a psychotherapist in a multitude of settings in multiple states across the East coast. Programs include child, adolescent, and adult outpatient, intensive outpatient, on-line therapy, substance abuse, and rehabilitation for pre-release felons.

Jennifer uses a combination of Internal Family Systems, Solution Focused Therapy, and Emotional and Behavior modification. She has dedicated herself to providing effective individual, family, and group therapy to best meet the needs of each client and their support system.

On a personal note, Jennifer is an artist by trade and often implements creativity into her treatment. She enjoys being an athlete and spending her free time with her spouse and two beautiful daughters.

Ashley Hinds, RDN, LDN

REGISTERED DIETITIAN

Ashley graduated magna cum laude from the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics. She completed her dietetic internship in various settings throughout the state of Kentucky. Ashley is an active member of several professional organizations including the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP), and the Behavioral Health Nutrition Dietetics Practice Group. Professionally, Ashley believes that nutrition is essential for wellness of both body and mind, and looks to provide adequate nutritional support and guidance for her clients. She is honored to be a part of the Center For Discovery family.

FACILITY COORDINATOR

Stacey Herdegen graduated from the University of South Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Professionally, Stacey combines her experience in clinical research, cognitive testing, and extensive managerial work with her passion for mental health and well-being. Stacey manages daily operations in the Outpatient program, including: administrative duties, research, group sessions, and clinical documentation.

PROGRAM THERAPIST

Sarah graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. While her passion for helping others lead her to become a therapist, her passion for travel and Spanish culture is what motivated her undergraduate Spanish minor. Continuing her education at Rollins College, she obtained her Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a certificate in College and University Counseling. Sarah completed her clinical internship at the University of Central Florida Counseling and Psychological Services where she developed therapeutic expertise in working with both adults and adolescents with co-occurring disorders. Sarah is not only a Program Therapist at the Orlando Outpatient location, she also travels to all of Center for Discovery’s East Coast facilities to assist with any/all client and staff support.

Shelby Maniccia Wachtel, LMHC

Shelby Maniccia Wachtel, LMHC

PROGRAM THERAPIST

Shelby is Center for Discovery’s Program Therapist. She studied at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York for her undergraduate degree in Psychology with a minor in Art History. While there, she performed research at the Barnard Center for Toddler Development and worked as an intern in many psychological settings, as well as worked as a preschool teacher. Shelby then went to the University of Central Florida for her graduate degree in Clinical Psychology. She performed her clinical internship at a behavioral hospital on the adolescent unit working with a range of co-occurring diagnoses. Shelby enjoys working with the eating disorder population because of the courage and strength clients show in choosing recovery.

Originally from Massachusetts, Ariana studied Adult Clinical Psychology with a minor Women’s Studies in her undergraduate career. She explored her love for both psychology and the law by completing her internship at Roxbury District Court running a program to help women on probation build confidence and education through a women’s literature program. Wanting to expand her clinical knowledge, she moved to Orlando to complete her Master’s in Mental Health Counseling. She completed her clinical internship within a state-funded women’s only inpatient substance abuse facility. Coming upon co-occurring eating disorders within her internship she then wanted to expand her knowledge within this field. Following her passion for helping others, she joined the Center for Discovery Outpatient team as a program therapist. Through joining the team she runs the SIR groups for not only Center for Discovery but the Alliance for Eating Disorder Awareness as well.

Stan Bogard

COUNSELOR III

Stan graduated from San Diego State University with a Master of Science in marriage Family Therapy. He has nine years of experience treating clients and his specialty is working with children, adolescents, and their families. Prior to working with the Center for Discovery Orlando outpatient team, Stan worked at the Center for Discovery Residential Treatment Center (RTC) providing group and meal therapy for clients. In addition to his experience working within the field of eating disorders, Stan has been the lead therapist at a general psychiatric hospital and has experience working in the substance abuse field as well. He is skilled in working with adults and adolescents in individual, group, and family therapy contexts.  He has clinical expertise in the fields domestic violence, crisis intervention, anger management, juvenile justice involvement and cultural issues. His areas of interest include clients dealing with life transitions and adjustment issues, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and personal growth.

Stan utilizes a motivational and person-centered approach, focusing on the individualized needs and strengths of the client.  Stan assists each client by working to increase their insight and helping them to learn the necessary skills to manage symptoms and stressors in an effective manner. He believes in the strengths of each and every client he works with!

CLINICAL OUTREACH AND STAFF RECRUITMENT REPRESENTATIVE

Sara specializes in Community Outreach, Marketing Strategy, and Business Development. Sara is actively involved with the recovery community. This has led her to public speaking, educating healthcare professionals, facilitating support groups, as well as fundraising and advocacy for prevention and improved access to treatment in the Central Florida Community and beyond.

  • I was sent to [Center for Discovery], an all women's eating disorder treatment facility, and I was terrified to go. I was told I would be there for a month and would return home after that. I ended staying there for almost 3 months, and I can honestly say I am beyond thankful for my time there. I learned so much and they helped me find myself and get over my traumas and learn to cope with issues that I was having. All the staff was super helpful and had my best interest at heart. I may have not liked all of them, but I knew they wanted what was best for me. Even after my insurance run out, the therapist I was working with arranged for me to go to another center to continue my treatment because I was not ready to come home. I highly recommend getting help with Center for Discovery. They truly care!

  • I was at [Center for Discovery] for 6 weeks. I'm from Ohio and being so far away from home was hard. The staff made me feel super comfortable and cared for, making my stay much more manageable. The program was very individualized. They worked hard to make sure my specific needs were met and that my specific behaviors were addressed. This is a top notch facility with incredibly caring staff. Not only were the house staff wonderful, but everyone from admissions to the medical director worked hard to make sure I knew what was going on. This is a wonderful company who are true to what they say. They gave me my life back. I'm someone who has been in and out of treatment for my eating disorder and this program was by far the best. I feel so optimistic about my future. The progress I made there was life changing and I will be forever grateful. I recommend this program to anyone who is serious, willing, and ready to get better.

  • I was surprised by my parents with the option of going to get help for my eating disorder and overall unhealthy lifestyle. I so badly wanted to get help, but was too ashamed. After talking to my mom I agreed to at least talk to someone from Center for Discoveryabout what program I would be in and what it would be like. The gal was super helpful, kind, and did not make me feel like I was the only person who suffered from what I did. She was very patient with me and overall helped out our family with the process of insurance and costs and what not. As for the actual facility I stayed at, it was a great experience.

  • We had our son in an acute care hospital and the social worker recommended the Center for Discovery. Before our son was discharged, my wife and I met with the staff and toured the facility. We were impressed by the staff and how the program was structured. Our son was there 6 weeks. It was a game changer and now we feel our son left with a good base of skills that he has continued to use. We now feel our son can leave a normal type life and not have to worry that he may need to live in a group home setting as an adult. We can't say enough for the help and support we received from the entire staff at the Center for Discovery. When we were considering the facility we did some reviews on line. Some weren't overly positive, but most were and we feel that it was a very positive experience for our son and our family. Even our son now admits that he learned some great skills and that his time at Center for Discovery turned his life around.

  • I completely recommend this outpatient program for the treatment of eating disorders.  The program is tailored to each individual and my daughter was able to attend school while attending. The staff is caring, knowledgeable and fully committed to the treatment process for the patient and family.  My family now better understands eating disorders and we are able to support our daughter through her recovery.  5 stars all the way!!
