Center For Discovery Atlanta, Georgia Dunwoody is a residential eating disorder treatment center that caters to adolescent males and females 10-18 years of age. This center opened in January 2017 and is located in Dunwoody, Georgia. Dunwoody is a northern suburb 30 minutes from Atlanta located in DeKalb County, Georgia. Atlanta is the capital and most populous city of the state of Georgia and is the cultural and economic center of the Atlanta metropolitan area, home to 5.7 million individuals and the ninth-largest metropolitan area in the United States. Center For Discovery Atlanta serves clients from Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, southeast Tennessee and Alabama. This adolescent, gender inclusive program, provides six beds in a residential home setting and offers individualized care and practices a “health at every size” philosophy. This residential program also provides dialectal behavioral therapy skills in a group setting, four times per week.

Residential treatment at Center For Discovery Atlanta, Georgia is a high level of care that provides 24-hour care to male and female teenager clients where they engage in group therapy, structured and monitored mealtimes, group social events, family therapy, and individual therapy. Weight restoration is the primary goal of eating disorder residential treatment. Additionally, scheduled mealtimes with other clients under staff supervision and personal meal plans where the client will meet with their nutritionist to discuss the specific requirements of each meal as part of weight restoration therapy in residential treatment.

Joy Ssebikindu, LPC

Joy Ssebikindu, LPC

PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Joy is a Licensed Professional Counselor and the Program Director at Center for Discovery Atlanta, Adolescent Eating Disorder Residential Treatment Center. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Child Development and her MEd in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Vanderbilt University. Joy comes with over a decade of experience in the mental health field. She specializes in working with individuals, couples, and families, who have issues surrounding communication. Particularly, she is passionate to support the challenging aspects of family transitions such as divorce, trauma, symptoms of depression, anxiety, and self harming behaviors that lead to or are intertwined with disordered eating and eating disorders. With Joy’s heartfelt desires to strengthening the family systems, she is grateful to be part of the Discovery Difference and to utilize her expertise in the program.

Hannah Sabella, MS, RDN, LDN

Hannah Sabella, MS, RDN, LDN

DIETITIAN

Hannah Sabella, MS, RDN, LDN is a Registered Dietitian new to Atlanta, forming her career around mental health and nutrition therapy for individuals struggling with eating disorders. Hannah works with all ages, but finds special meaning in adolescent nutrition counseling. Her treatment interventions include nutrition education and counseling, meal planning, and practicing body image acceptance. Her goal for her clients is to live free from ED, confidently able to nurture their physical and mental health through all stages of life.

Hannah first earned her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition & Dietetics at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri before moving to Chicago suburbs to earn her Master of Science in Nutrition & Wellness at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL. After that, she traded in cold Chicago winters for hot Atlanta summers! Hannah joined the Vinings Wellness Team in October 2016 in addition to working at Center for Discovery helping adolescents with primary eating disorders.

In her free time, Hannah enjoys riding her bicycle on the beltline, visiting her favorite coffee shops, and hiking with friends. Hannah attends IAEDP (International Association for Eating Disorder Professionals) seminars and is a member of the Greater Atlanta Dietetics Association and is currently pursuing specialization as a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDRD).

Manisha Arora, RN

FACILITY MANAGER/NURSE ADMINISTRATOR

Manisha Arora, RN, graduated from Chamberlain College of Nursing with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2015. During her time at the university she volunteered at the Grady Health System, and after graduation began working as a Registered Nurse at North Atlanta Vascular Clinic. Manisha then began working at Center for Discovery, Atlanta as a Registered Nurse in 2017, and progressed her career to become the Facility Manager and Nurse Administrator.

For the past 14 years, Manisha has been an active volunteer for Sant Nirankari Mission, and leads spiritual workshops for children at the local center. She has also been responsible for organizing the blood donation and health clinics with the local American Red Cross organizations. She is passionate about supporting not only the needs of the clients and families at Center for Discovery , but the many tasks associated to assist the facility and staff .

Dr. Maloa Chu Affuembey, MD

Dr. Maloa Chu Affuembey, MD

PSYCHIATRIST

Dr. Affuembey, MD, is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and was born and raised in Cameroon, West Africa. She obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Texas, with a major in Biology and minor in Psychology, and later studied at The Saba University School of Medicine in Netherlands-Antilles. She completed her residency at Louisiana State University – Our Lady of The Lake Psychiatry Program in Baton Rouge, where she served as Chief Resident.

Dr Affeumbey is passionate to assist those who suffer disruptions in daily relationships with food and body image. Eating disorders are an area of special interest to her as they hold a unique role in which they navigate the mind’s influence on the body. She believes that nourishment cannot only be life sustaining, but also a point of connection within and across cultures.

Dr. Neha Bhatt, MD

PEDIATRICIAN

Neha Bhatt, MD. graduated from Emory University with BS of Biology and Minor in Psychology and medical school in Cambridge University in the UK. She completed pediatric residency in Chicago and ended her years as Chief Resident in her program. She moved back to Atlanta and worked as a general pediatrician before beginning her family. She returns back to focus on pediatric and adolescent medicine, Dr. Bhatt has joined the Center for Discovery to support the challenges of ED medicine.

  • I was sent to [Center for Discovery], an all women's eating disorder treatment facility, and I was terrified to go. I was told I would be there for a month and would return home after that. I ended staying there for almost 3 months, and I can honestly say I am beyond thankful for my time there. I learned so much and they helped me find myself and get over my traumas and learn to cope with issues that I was having. All the staff was super helpful and had my best interest at heart. I may have not liked all of them, but I knew they wanted what was best for me. Even after my insurance run out, the therapist I was working with arranged for me to go to another center to continue my treatment because I was not ready to come home. I highly recommend getting help with Center for Discovery. They truly care!

  • I was at [Center for Discovery] for 6 weeks. I'm from Ohio and being so far away from home was hard. The staff made me feel super comfortable and cared for, making my stay much more manageable. The program was very individualized. They worked hard to make sure my specific needs were met and that my specific behaviors were addressed. This is a top notch facility with incredibly caring staff. Not only were the house staff wonderful, but everyone from admissions to the medical director worked hard to make sure I knew what was going on. This is a wonderful company who are true to what they say. They gave me my life back. I'm someone who has been in and out of treatment for my eating disorder and this program was by far the best. I feel so optimistic about my future. The progress I made there was life changing and I will be forever grateful. I recommend this program to anyone who is serious, willing, and ready to get better.

  • I was surprised by my parents with the option of going to get help for my eating disorder and overall unhealthy lifestyle. I so badly wanted to get help, but was too ashamed. After talking to my mom I agreed to at least talk to someone from Center for Discoveryabout what program I would be in and what it would be like. The gal was super helpful, kind, and did not make me feel like I was the only person who suffered from what I did. She was very patient with me and overall helped out our family with the process of insurance and costs and what not. As for the actual facility I stayed at, it was a great experience.

  • We had our son in an acute care hospital and the social worker recommended the Center for Discovery. Before our son was discharged, my wife and I met with the staff and toured the facility. We were impressed by the staff and how the program was structured. Our son was there 6 weeks. It was a game changer and now we feel our son left with a good base of skills that he has continued to use. We now feel our son can leave a normal type life and not have to worry that he may need to live in a group home setting as an adult. We can't say enough for the help and support we received from the entire staff at the Center for Discovery. When we were considering the facility we did some reviews on line. Some weren't overly positive, but most were and we feel that it was a very positive experience for our son and our family. Even our son now admits that he learned some great skills and that his time at Center for Discovery turned his life around.

  • I completely recommend this outpatient program for the treatment of eating disorders.  The program is tailored to each individual and my daughter was able to attend school while attending. The staff is caring, knowledgeable and fully committed to the treatment process for the patient and family.  My family now better understands eating disorders and we are able to support our daughter through her recovery.  5 stars all the way!!
